Behind the seams:

The Crown and Country print

Brace yourselves – we’ve officially declared this autumn the season of British creativity. That means a collection with oodles of style, twists on tradition and a hero print that celebrates our rich heritage. After all, Boden without print is like scones without jam – unthinkable.

‘Fashion is all about reinventing the old and making it new’

Boden Design Director Mariam Boutorabi was the creative visionary behind our new-season range. ‘Fashion is all about reinventing the old and making it new and relevant for today,’ she says. ‘With this in mind, I wanted to create a conversational print that honoured our British heritage, featuring colours that would complement the rest of the collection.’

After weeks of research, Mariam gave long-time collaborator Sholto Drumlanrig her brief. The result is bristling with British symbolism, including crowns, flags and horses. But we’re particularly proud of the eye-catching Tudor rose motif – the sort that appeared everywhere in castles and stately homes in 16th century England.

‘This print has hidden details you may not notice at first’

Next on the agenda: playing around with scale and those glorious colours that are so much a part of Boden’s DNA. ‘We wanted to uplift this beautiful print with joy and wit,’ Mariam explains, ‘so we used a punchy red and pink palette.’ So, royal… but make it fashion.

This pattern appears on two colourways: a pink version referred to as ‘Milkshake Pink’ and a moodier, inky-coloured incarnation, ‘French Navy’ – subtle backdrops that contrast with the brighter print. ‘This print is really special,’ says Mariam. ‘It has all these hidden details that others may not notice at first.’

‘We Brits are always pushing the creative boundaries’

Within this collectable range sits a tie-neck dress, bias panelled midi skirt and silk shirt and scarf – all emblazoned with the print – and an embroidered skirt, each made to be mixed and matched to inject some ebullience into everyday style.

‘It’s a conversation-starter, and will easily take you from work, to parties, all the way to Christmas day’

‘The British spirit means we are always pushing the boundaries in terms of creativity, while still respecting the heritage of the past – this print encapsulates that,’ says Mariam. ‘It’s a conversation-starter, and will easily take you from work, to parties, all the way to Christmas day.’

So, there you have it: our Crown and Country print. The perfect solution to that tricky smart/casual dress code (and ideal for those terrible at small talk).
