We may look like the product of tireless and elaborate craftsmanship, but we're actually pretty easy to make. Follow these simple instructions and before you know it you'll have a gang of Sock Friends where before you had merely a clutch of sorry, single old socks.
- Turn your sock inside out and place it flat with the heel facing upwards.
- Sew a W shape on the sole of the foot part of the sock (See A). This section will become the legs of your sock puppet.
- Cut around this W shape about 0.5cm below the sewn line, taking care not to throw away the piece you're left with.
- Stuff the 'legs' and the body and then sit the puppet up on its bottom and legs. (See B).
- You now have a very basic sock friend. Cut the stretchy top band of the sock off (unless you are making a cat or a very tall sock friend) and sew up the top. (see B).
- Now it is time to choose extra features for your sock friend. To make arms/ears, turn the leftover toe section inside out. Sew two arm/ear shapes on it, as shown in diagram (See C).
- Cut just below the sewn lines to leave you with two little arm/ear shapes with open tops.
- Stuff the little arm/ear pockets and then sew them into position (See D and E).
- If you want to give your Sock Friend cat's ears, then take the stretchy top section and sew diagonally across the top section of it, as shown in the diagram. (See F).
- Next you need to sew 2 diagonal lines from the top corners of the stretchy top band the bottom corner of the stretchy top band. Cut below the bottom sewn lines to give you your ears.
- Sew your ears in position.
- Next you can give your sock friend extra details like button eyes, popper noses and a funny name.
